Self-confidence is when you trust in your own abilities to do something. This is a hugely important life skill and personal characteristic since it influences how other people see us and respond to us. If you lack self-confidence, it means that you don’t trust yourself. By implication, it means that others will feel they can’t trust you, since you don’t even trust yourself.
How do you know that you don’t trust yourself? Just listen to what your brain is saying. If you engage in negative self-talk, it means that you lack self-confidence. If you have the habit of running yourself down, expressing doubts in your abilities, and challenging your view of your own success – even if you don’t do it aloud – then you are promoting a low self-esteem and lack self-confidence.
Thankfully, it is something that you can regain through positive thinking. Because positive thinking promotes self-awareness, you will become aware of that inner voice. It’s a sneaky little bugger, since it tends to speak from your subconscious mind. You can think of negative self-talk as the squeaks from your brain’s cart as it pushes along the tracks in your mental state that leads to doubt. Comments like “You’ll never be able to do that. You’re not going to finish on time. What if they don’t like it (because you don’t like it)?” all serve to criticize yourself and create a low self-confidence.
Instead of using negative self-talk, you will begin using positive self-talk once you start using positive thinking (Bilanich, 2008). This will help you focus on positive and optimistic things in life.
Motivated behavior is behavior that is chosen (Grieve et al., 2005). When we choose something, we take ownership of that something. This places us in the driver’s seat in our lives, and suddenly, we can’t blame others or doubt ourselves. Low self-confidence is a result of a loss of power: your trust in yourself is missing and you feel disempowered. By showing motivated behavior and choosing to use positive self-talk, you reclaim your power and become self-confident again.
Having self-confidence sets the ball rolling as you now begin to trust in yourself and you can trust in the world around you and that you deserve the goodness out there.
